Series Five: 19th Ward

$27.99

The largest and seemingly most diverse neighborhood in Rochester, the 19th ward also holds a special designation with the only ward to keep it's title. After Rochesterville was chartered into Rochester, old neighborhoods like Frankfort, King's Landing, and McCrackensville were formally re-organized into wards in the city. Over time, these wards developed their own cultures and styles leading to new nicknames, but for peculiar reasons 19th Ward kept it's designation. But that is not to say the 19th Ward is bland. Stately homes are found on every street highlighting many varieties of architectural styles, and more than a few areas of the neighborhood are in the process of designation by the National Registrar of Historic Places. This is celebrated by the hard wood accent color of the shirt.

Along the river in the southern part of the neighborhood lies one of Frederick Law Olmstead's contributions to Rochester: The Genesee Valley Park. The Eric Canal and Genesee River briefly combine here with trails from the Genesee Greenway, Erie Canal path, and Genesee River way all converging. There are two public golf courses, vast open space, a recreational area, and four foot bridges traversing the two water ways.

Rochester's long stretching network of trolley routes serviced the far reaches of the city; The 400 line of University and Arnett traveled the 19th Ward, through Center City, and ending in the Neighborhood Of The Arts.
